Study Abroad

Interested in having the adventure of a lifetime? Looking for a way to augment your Asian & Middle East Studies major or minor? Would you like to improve your Asian language skills?

Students wishing to receive Northwestern credit for study in Asia and the Middle East have a number of exciting options. Northwestern currently has affiliated study abroad programs in the following countries:

China, Egypt, India, Israel, Japan, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam, and Korea.

Extensive information on each program is available on the Study Abroad Office web site. Students should see the director of the Asian and Middle East Studies program before and upon return from study abroad.

When students return to Northwestern, they should make an appointment with the Asian and Middle East Studies advisor and bring the following materials:

*1. Syllabi from courses,
*2. Major course work (papers, tests, presentations, journals, etc.),
3. Course descriptions,
4. Notebooks if possible to better clarify the course material, and
5. Petition For Credit for Courses Taken Abroad
*the most important materials to bring back

This way, the advisor can see what was taught in totality, plus the Dean's office will also require these materials. Sometimes students can only bring limited work back, but should bring as much as possible.

Students must complete the Petition for Credit for Courses Taken Abroad for WCAS credit.

Study Abroad Research Project (SARP) 2008

Initiated in Spring Quarter 2002, SARP is a small, elite pre-departure course for outbound study abroad students that focuses on study abroad research. The primary goal of the program is to encourage and prepare students to do research abroad that they can develop into a senior honors thesis, independent study, fellowship, graduate school application essay, or postgraduate work when they return. The program also gives students tools for thinking more deeply about cross-cultural learning and foreign cultures. SARP reflects the Study Abroad Office’s goal of developing stronger connections between students’ study abroad experiences and their academic work on campus. It is also a clear reflection of the Provost and President’s directive to encourage more research projects among undergraduates.

We will be accepting applications for the Fall 2008 quarter until Friday, September 26, 2008.
