Tea Ceremony Demonstration & Tasting
to Celebrate the Arrival of Spring

Please join Professor Sato for this special program on Sunday, April 19, 2009 at 1:00pm in the McCormick Auditorium at the Norris Center

Guests will be offered an authentic Maccha (green tea) tasting.**

Shozo Sato is a master of Zen arts, including ikebana, the tea ceremony, and Sumi-e (black ink painting). Born in Ikataku, Kobe City, Japan in 1933, Shozo Sato received a degree in fine arts from Bunka Gakuin College, Tokyo, and also highest diplomas in the
Japanese tea ceremony, flower arrangement, and classical dance. His dramatic training took place at Toho Academy, Tokyo; in Kabuki, he was a special
student of Nakamura Kenzaburo XVII. Professor Sato conducts workshops on all of these arts throughout the United States, Asia, and Europe and is the author of numerous books, including Tea Ceremony, Ikebana, and The Art of Sumi-e.

Koto Sound Team KyaraEnjoy an evening of musical beauty, performed by this acclaimed ensemble from Nagoya, Japan. The group takes its name, Kyara, from a Japanese word for a fine and subtle incense made from wood. Kyara’s musical selections will range from exquisite classical works to a contemporary fusion of anime action hero themes with American jazz, performed on koto, a stringed, zither-like instrument. Tea master, artist and scholar Shozo Sato will host you on this musical journey.

The Koto Sound Team Kyara has performed at the Japan Festival, Vienna Concert Hall in Vienna, Austria, at the Asian Museum in San Francisco, in Aberdeen, Scotland as well as throughout Japan.  The Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and the Asian and Middle East Studies Program at Northwestern University are honored to host this award winning musical troupe. KABUKI KIDS OF DAMINE VILLAGE

The Kabuki Kids of Damine Village, Aichi, Japan, maintain a 300-year-old pledge that the children of their village learn and perform Kabuki. The Damine Kabuki Troupe’s performance will be narrated by renowned Master of Japanese traditional arts, Shozo Sato!
